What is Dual Leadership: Partnering from the Inside Out?

Building on our commitment to develop a wide array of professional development programs for the field, TCG, along with partners Dance/USA, the national service organization for dance, and the Institute for Cultural Policy and Practice at Virginia Tech created this one of a kind program for artistic and managing leaders from theatre and dance companies to come together and build their understanding of the unique challenges involved in developing sustainable and effective dual leadership structures. This engaging seminar, scheduled for February 24–26, 2008, in New Orleans, LA, focuses on the competencies and practices required to build strong team-based leadership models that advance the artistic vision and build a resilient and healthy organizational culture.

The first iteration of Dual Leadership was held in Philadelphia in February, 2007, and included teams from small, mid-sized and large theatre and dance companies. One participant stated, "I gained a deeper understanding of my partner's and my strengths and weaknesses, which I feel will have an impact on our work together as we develop as a company." Said another, "…very engaging, deceptively direct and efficient." A final participant offered this quote, "I loved Geno's work, perhaps because it was new to me, but I could have spent much more time with him."

Geno Schnell, Ph.D., will return as a faculty member for 2008. Geno is formerly director of organization development and diversity at Johns Hopkins University and faculty director of the Executive Leadership Institute for urban leaders and librarians. Joining Geno will be Kate Beatty, Ph.D., who is group manager of the Leading Teams and Organizations sector for the Center for Creative Leadership, and co-author of Becoming a Strategic Leader, Your Role in Your Organization's Enduring Success.

On Sunday evening, the seminar opens with each team identifying where and how they have been effective as individual leaders and as a team, what significant challenges lay ahead and the strengths they possess as a team in meeting those challenges. The following morning the faculty will lead the participants in a series of activities (presentation, discussions, exercises and reflections) that will introduce such themes as:

  • Building leadership as an institutional capacity
  • Increasing organizational cohesion and adaptability
  • Establishing and maintaining a culture of trust
  • Managing the tension between artistic vitality and organizational sustainability

On Tuesday, each team will identify and discuss ways in which they can be more effective as leaders in working with one another, with their staff, artists and boards of trustees back home in their organization.

This highly interactive seminar places a strong emphasis on peer-to-peer learning and will focus on the unique dual leadership realities faced by the senior artistic and management leaders of not-for-profit professional theatre and dance companies.

In order to optimize learning and assure a highly participatory experience, participation will be limited to 20 artistic/managing leader teams. Each participant will receive a complete binder of course materials at the seminar in New Orleans.
