What is the Fall Forum?

TCG's 2006 Fall Forum, Backstage with the Board: A Look at Art-Making, will take place in New York City from Friday, November 10, to Sunday, November 12. The Forum will bring together approximately 150 participants, including teams of artistic and management leaders and trustees from TCG member theatres, to provide an opportunity for in-depth discussion on governance issues. TCG's Forums give theatre leaders the chance to hear some of the most provocative thinkers in the field and to engage with their peers in an intimate and informal setting.

Fall Forums are designed to enhance board effectiveness and performance. While historically Fall Forums have dealt with management structure and financial issues, last year we focused on the artistic process, with a special emphasis on playwriting. This year, we continue the conversation on art-making with an emphasis on adaptation and design. We will seek to explore the links between financial planning, governance and artistic mission/aspiration. How can board members best support and contribute to the artistic mission of the theatre? How can board members think about artistic success beyond critical reviews and box office receipts? What is the role of creativity in true leadership?

As a formal part of the Fall Forum agenda, participants will attend a theatre production together on Saturday evening, November 11, at 8:00pm. We have arranged for a block of seats for Kaos by Martha Clarke, at the New York Theatre Workshop. Conceived and directed by Martha Clarke (creator of the seminal work Vienna: Lusthaus) with text by Frank Pugliese and Giovanni Papotto, Kaos is a new theatrical work that uses dance, live music, text and visual imagery to re-tell four Luigi Pirandello stories featured in the Taviani Brothers' renowned 1984 film Kaos. Set in turn-of-the-century Sicily, these stories portray common people in mystical situations, heavily influenced by poverty and the violent political unrest of the time.

One ticket to Kaos is included in the registration fee. We plan to explore the artistic process through the lens of this particular play, and our experience will culminate in attending the play.

The focus on art-making at Fall Forum 2006 will be expanded upon with continued discussion of American theatre in the new century at the 2007 TCG National Conference, to be held at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis next June. We look forward to engaging board members and theatre leaders in this important discussion, both at the Fall Forum and next year in Minneapolis.

Fall Forum attendance is open to staff and trustees of TCG member theatres only. Each member theatre may bring up to 5 participants. Because of the nature of this year's Fall Forum, we strongly encourage theatres to bring teams of trustees and artistic and managing leaders for deeper impact.
