New Generations Program

Objective #1: Future Leaders

Online Registration

If you are interested in applying for the New Generations Program Future Leaders and meet the eligibility requirements, the first step is to submit an Online Registration Form (deadline 10/06/2008 at midnight). Theatres may only apply in one objective, either Future Leaders or Future Audiences.

Preliminary Proposal

The New Generations Program Future Leaders preliminary proposal form should be completed after submitting an Online Registration Form. The Preliminary Proposal Form and detailed guidelines are available as downloadable PDFs:

Eligibility Requirements

For requirements and details about each objective, please download the grant guidelines. All applicant theatres must meet the following requirements:

  • 501 (c) (3) status
  • Location within the US or its territories
  • Employment of at least one full-time salaried staff person at the time of application
  • The proposed mentor must be a full-time employee of the host theatre at the time of application
  • All artists must be compensated at least a minimal amount for their work. It is not necessary for the theatre to use an Equity contract
  • Minimum of three years’ prior existence as a non-profit professional producing organization
  • History of mounting its own theatre productions within the previous year
  • Organizational capacity to implement the projected activity. (Applicant theatres are asked to submit adequate annual fiscal information documenting financial performance. While audits are strongly encouraged, 990's will be accepted from theatres with budgets under $500,000)
  • Theatres may only apply in one objective, either Future Leaders or Future Audiences
  • Previous recipients whose project activity will not be complete by April 1, 2009 are not eligible to apply

The New Generations Program is primarily designed to serve producing theatre organizations and not other organizations whose primary mission is audience development, advocacy, or other service-related goals. However, in the Future Leaders objective, the panel will consider applications from non-producing organizations who are actively engaged in the development of new theatrical work and new artists.

Selection Process

The application process for each round of the New Generations Program lasts seven months. On October 6th, all applicant theatres are required to submit an Online Registration Form, notifying TCG of their intention to submit a proposal. On October 6th, applicant theatres must also submit a Preliminary Proposal, including a Preliminary Proposal Form; a two-page narrative description of the project and selected information about the theatre. Preliminary Proposals are not accepted from theatres that did not submit an Online Registration Form by the deadline.

A preliminary panel, composed of independent national theatre professionals, reviews the proposals and selects a portion of the applicants to submit a final application. Final applications are submitted in March, and another national independent selection panel reviews the applications and chooses recipients. Recipients are notified in late May, and they are announced to the field in July.
