FIELD LETTER
In the June Field Letter, Teresa plugs the National Performing Arts Convention for the final time and announces the upcoming Leadership Teleconference, The Contributed Income Quest: New Strategies to Maximize Results with Dory Vanderhoof. She introduces the last round of Expanding the Theatre Manager’s Repertoire, TCG and Target Corporation’s popular human resources training program, and encourages member theatres to submit videos to TCG’s YouTube Channel. She tackles the recent controversy over charities’ tax-exempt status, observing that “while theatres are notoriously under-endowed, they also have ticket prices that are significantly lower than the actual cost of creating productions and provide productions intended to educate and benefit the public. They provide important services to the community such as arts education in schools, as well as community and neighborhood development programs. It is critical to realize that our ability to exist and deliver on our public mission would not be possible without charitable contributions and tax exemptions made possible by state and federal exempt status.”

ADVOCACY NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN ARTS ALLIANCE AND TCG
White Space Issue: Please Write to Your Member of Congress!
Google continues to advocate in Washington for access to the White Space spectrum. It was recently reported in The Wall Street Journal that Google co-founder Larry Page traveled to Washington to meet with Members of Congress and the FCC to urge that they open up access to the White Space.
If you haven’t yet done so, please urge your Member of Congress to instruct the FCC Chairman to preserve the ability of wireless microphones used in the performing arts to operate without interference. The FCC should be urged to conduct adequate testing before permitting new devices to operate in the White Space spectrum.

Back to Top2008 National Arts Forum Series: New Frameworks for the Changing Face of America

These issues will be addressed by featured speaker Patricia Martin, an author and cultural analyst. Ms. Martin will discuss her “RenGen” theory, short for Renaissance Generation, a cultural movement created by the confluence of art, education, entertainment and business, resulting in the powerful new “cultural consumer”. RenGen is a way of seeing how the issue of diversity has evolved from statistics and quotas to a new reality, which is reflected in this new trend that crosses race, class, age and ethnicity. The National Arts Forum Series will continue through October 2008 in 10 cities across America.

DEVELOPMENT
Foundation Center Releases Foundation Growth and Giving Estimates: Current Outlook 2008
In a survey of more than 72,000 grantmaking foundations, the Foundation Center’s Foundation Growth and Giving Estimates report finds that foundation giving increased by an estimated 10 percent in 2007, growing to $42.9 billion in total. The report finds double-digit increases in giving by independent foundations, family foundations and community foundations. Giving by corporate foundations also increased but only by 6.6 percent. In spite of the current trouble in the economy, the report suggests that more than half of the survey’s respondents expect to increase their giving in 2008, and that foundation assets grew an estimated 9 percent in 2007, which suggests that foundation giving overall will show modest growth in 2008.

Back to TopFoundation Center Releases Key Facts on Corporate Foundations 2008
A new summary report from the Foundation Center finds that giving by corporate foundations increased 6.6 percent in 2007 to an estimated $4.4 billion. The report is the result of the Foundation Center’s latest research on the size, scope and philanthropic interests of thousands of corporate foundations in the United States. Although corporate foundation giving has grown at a slower rate than other foundation giving, the report finds that corporate giving has almost doubled since 1990. Education and human services comprised the majority of corporate giving, both receiving approximately 25 percent of total corporate donations, whereas arts and culture only made up about 12 percent of corporate giving.

MANAGEMENT & RESEARCH
Hill Strategies Releases Report, Social Effects of Culture: Exploratory Statistical Evidence
Recently released by Canada’s Hill Strategies Research, Social Effects of Culture: Exploratory Statistical Evidence examines the social impact of four cultural activities: reading books, attending live performances, visiting art galleries and attending movie theatres. Data was drawn from Statistics Canada’s General Social Survey 2005. The report found that performing arts attendees tended to be more likely to volunteer for a not-for-profit organization, more likely to donate money or goods to a not-for-profit and were even more likely to do a favor for a neighbor.

Back to TopProject Streamline Releases Report, Drowning in Paperwork, Distracted from Purpose
Recently released by Project Streamline, an initiative of the Grants Managers Network, Drowning in Paperwork, Distracted from Purpose: Challenges and Opportunities in Grant Application and Reporting summarizes some of the key frustrations observed by not-for-profits attempting to comply with grant application and reporting procedures. The report highlights ten inefficiencies in current grant application and reporting procedures, including the lack of “right-sized” reporting requirements, insufficient net grants, due-diligence redundancy and undermined trust between granters and grantees. The report also outlines how the current system could be improved, such as streamlining communications, relieving the administrative burden from grantees and rigorously auditing the amount of information needed to bestow grants.
