Professional Development Programs

TCG strives to improve the managerial expertise of our membership through regular professional development opportunities and events. Click on an event or opportunity from the list below for more information.

  • Expanding the Theatre Manager's Repertoire
TCG partnered with Target Corporation in 1998 to create this dynamic program that builds on Target's human resources training methods, which exemplify the best practices in the corporate sector. Specifically tailored for theatre managers, the program was developed with considerable input from a diverse group of artistic and management leaders and senior managers, and is revised each year in response to participants' evaluations.
  • Fall Forum
Each year, the TCG Fall Forum brings approximately 150 participants, including teams of artistic and management leaders and trustees from TCG member theatres, to New York City to provide an opportunity for in-depth discussion on governance issues. TCG's Forums give theatre leaders the chance to hear some of the most provocative thinkers in the field and to engage with their peers in an intimate and informal setting.
  • Dual Leadership: Partnering from the Inside Out
Created specifically for two-person artistic/management leadership teams, this program encourages participants to come together and build their understanding of the unique challenges involved in developing sustainable and effective dual leadership structures. The seminar focuses on the competencies and practices required to build strong team-based leadership models that support both the artistic vision and the institutional resilience required for long term impact.
  • Leadership for Artistic Directors
Leadership for Artistic Directors is designed for the artistic director or prospective artistic director who wants to understand more clearly the leadership responsibilities of the position.
  • New Artistic Leader Institute
Last held in 2002, the New Artistic Leader Institute's goal is to help orient new and prospective artistic directors to the non-artistic aspects of leading a theatre. The institute is the only program of its kind designed specifically to help new artistic leaders understand the responsibilities that will extend beyond their artistic role. The program includes discussions about audience development, community relations, personnel management, working with a board of directors, relationships with managing directors and finances.
  • Managers Teleconferences
Twice a year, TCG offers a teleconference series moderated by an experienced professional from the field that enables geographically separated senior managers to find solutions to common problems.
  • TCG Grant Programs
TCG provides a variety of grants for artists and other theatre professionals to aid in their professional development.
  • Internships
TCG interns learn about contemporary American theatre through contact with the artists and professionals who work in our over 425 member theatres, as well as constant interaction with the TCG staff and its unique resources.
