GOVERNING BOARDS SURVEY

TCG periodically conducts a Governing Boards Survey that captures not-for-profit board of directors' composition—including age, gender, and race/ethnicity—as well as board structures; policies and activities; development and engagement practices; committees; board/staff relations; and priorities. On November 11, 2024, TCG launched the 2024 Governing Boards Survey, with all Member Theatres encouraged to participate by the deadline of December 11, 2024. 

On April 28, 2025, the results of the 2024 survey were made public in In Whom We Trust VI: Governing Boards Survey 2024. You can now view the report in full.

Since 1998, Theatre Communications Group (TCG) has periodically conducted a survey that explores theatre governing boards in depth. These surveys have formed the basis of a series of reports revealing the critical role that board members play in our organizations. This latest edition is the first in over 10 year, filling in an important gap in our knowledge of governance practice.

If you're a TCG Member Theatre (not sure? check here), complete the Governing Boards Survey on the following page. The Survey should take between 45-60 minutes to complete. If you need to complete the survey in multiple sittings, please make sure you're logged into a Google Account so Google Forms will save your data. A PDF of the complete survey is also available to read in advance. To prepare, you may wish to collect your board's demographics and annual giving data in advance of beginning the survey. For questions and further information, please contact [email protected].
